Shirley Lucille Kronert Russ passed to her heavenly home on December 14, 2023 at 95 years old. She was born February 17, 1928 in Houston, Texas to Evelyn Swinnea Kronert and George Kronert. She was born and raised in Houston. Then in 1967, she and her husband, Jack Russ, moved to Waller to raise their children, where she remained until her passing.
One of the hardest working people you could find, Shirley spent her early years working for the railroad. Once she became a mother, she stayed home to raise her children. She decided to get a job as the cafeteria manager for Waller ISD, a time when all of the food was homemade. Later, she worked in the oil and gas industry until she retired for the second time, just shy of her 80th birthday.
While raising her family, she spent time supporting them in all of their activities. She served as den mother for Boy Scouts, a softball coach and was active in the PTA and the Band Booster Club. She was also a member of the Waller Order of the Eastern Star and held many offices.
During her life, she enjoyed many bacon and egg sandwiches, and loved sharing them with her grandchildren on Saturday mornings. Every Christmas, she baked Christmas cookies with the family sugar cookie recipe, where she was the best at decorating the Santas! Mom passed along her love of sweets to her family. She was an especially skilled gardener - whether that was in the vegetable garden or growing beautiful flowers. Her and her longtime companion, Elmo Calmes, enjoyed working in the garden and canning their fruits of labor - especially their Picante Sauce. She found great joy in spending time with her family. She cherished the many family gatherings shared over holidays and celebrations and especially enjoyed hosting Thanksgiving dinners. She was a faithful servant her entire life and inspired those around her to be the same. Her faith journey began at Lindale Baptist Church followed by becoming a member of Studewood Revival Center, both in Houston. During her later years, she attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waller with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Polly Firtha and Marilyn Miller; and granddaughter, Samantha Wisener.
Shirley is survived by her sons: Ray Moore (Millie) and Steve Russ (Carol Evans), daughter, Jackie Bremer (Butch); grandchildren Lisa Trygar (Joe), David Moore, Rachel Bretz, Holly Huddleston (Jason), Chad Russ (Megan), Brittney Brunner (Blake), Jennifer Bremer (fiancé Dustin Owen); sister-in-law and brother-in-law Doris and Travis Thomas; and, numerous great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her canine chair partners, Pugsleigh and Molly.
The family would like to thank her caretakers, Andrea, Mildred, Mrs. Hattie, BeBe and Mr. Frank for the loving care they provided for mom.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waller at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the celebration at 1 p.m.
