Paul Eugene Merkel Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Paul Eugene Merkel II, 49, of Cypress, Texas, who departed this life unexpectedly on August 21, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Paul was born on February 27, 1976, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Margaret Emma Fineagan Merkel and Paul Vernon Merkel, Jr. He graduated from Westminster High School in 1994 and soon after joined the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving for six years. He later continued his military service with the U.S. Army National Guard for ten years, including deployment in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 2008, Paul moved to Texas to begin the next chapter of his life. He graduated from the University of Houston–Downtown Police Academy in 2010 and earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2012. He went on to serve with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, where he was promoted to Sergeant in 2017. Paul was deeply proud to have fulfilled his lifelong dream of serving and protecting his community through a career in law enforcement.
Paul faced health challenges in recent years with strength and resilience. Even so, he embraced the joy of becoming a grandfather to two beloved granddaughters. In late 2024, he relocated to College Station, Texas, to be closer to his children, who had settled in the area. Before his health declined, Paul enjoyed woodworking and had a lifelong passion for working on cars—a love he shared with his children. He made sure each of them learned the basics of car maintenance before getting behind the wheel. His son, Trae, now honors him by restoring one of Paul’s old trucks.
A dedicated sports fan, Paul was a lifelong supporter of the Baltimore Ravens, proudly donning purple during football season. After becoming a Texan, he also grew to love the Houston Astros, faithfully cheering them on each summer.
Paul will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives were enriched by his love, service and friendship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Vernon Merkel, Jr. and Margaret Emma Fineagan Merkel; his uncle, James Carroll Fineagan; and his grandparents, Paul Eugene and Margaret Croft Merkel, and George Paul and Emma Mildred Wright Fineagan.
Paul is survived by his wife, Victoria Merkel; his children, Paul E. “Trae” Merkel III and wife Jordan, Lance Merkel and partner Leia Burowes, McKaylah Merkel and fiancé Joshua Dixon, Maverick Merkel, Marc Sanchez and wife Maria, and Matthew Plitt; and his cherished granddaughters, Maria Victoria “Frankie” Sanchez and Luna Kehlani Dixon. He is also survived by his sister, Verna-Leigh Kraus and husband Michael; his brother, George Carroll Merkel and wife Laura; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held on August 31, 2025 from 2 – 6 pm at the Ravens Way Clubhouse, 12730 Jarvis Rd., Cypress, TX 77429.
