Melissa Ann (Thornton) Garcia Obituary

Melissa Ann Garcia, 45, of Bryan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, surrounded by those she loved most. A Celebration of Life is set for 2PM Friday, September 5 at Christ Church.

Born on July 27, 1980, in Bryan, Melissa was the beloved daughter of Douglas and Julie Thornton. From the beginning it was clear Melissa had a gift for caring and loving others—a gift that guided her to a career in nursing. She approached her work with compassion, grace, and an unshakable kindness that touched countless lives. Her patients weren’t just patients—they were people she cared for deeply and treated like family.

Above all else, Melissa was a devoted wife and mother. She shared 21 beautiful years of marriage with her husband, Jason Garcia, and together they raised three incredible children: Mason, Maddox, and Jade. She was the heart of their home and the biggest cheerleader in the stands—whether it was for her own children, the children of friends, or any young athlete who needed support. Melissa was the consummate baseball mom, always ready with a warm hug, a word of encouragement, or a celebratory high-five.

Melissa faced life—and illness—with unmatched courage. She was a fighter until the very end, holding onto hope, love, and laughter through even the darkest days. As she would say: *Cancer sucks*—but it never stole her spirit.

She is preceded in death by her uncles, Gary Thornton and Scott Thornton; her grandmother, Mary Hunt; and grandfathers, Charles Thornton Jr. and Herb Schwager.

Melissa leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her devoted husband, Jason Garcia; her three children, Mason, Maddox, and Jade; her parents, Douglas and Julie Thornton; her sister and brother-in-law, Jacque and Kyle Merz; her nephew, Christian Merz; and her nieces, Camdyn and Collins Merz; Her Mother-in-Law Charlotte Hunt, Brother In-laws Christopher and Michael Paddack; Father In-Law Pete Garcia; Aunts and Uncles David and Janet Thornton and family, Charlie and Marcia Thornton and family, Becky Thornton and family, Freddie and Karen Harbold and family; and Ronald Harbold; Grandparents Jeanne Thornton-Schwagger, Fred and Shirley Harbold.

She also leaves behind countless friends, colleagues, and patients whose lives were forever changed by her presence.

Melissa was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and nurse. Her light, love, and laughter will be deeply missed—but never forgotten.

The Family would like to extend their deepest thanks and love to Mel’s St. Joseph Family, Amedysis Hospice, and Bryan EMS for their amazing care and compassion while taking care of Melissa.
