Kermit James Decker, 90, of Bryan, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. A Visitation is set for Monday, May 18, from 6pm to 8pm with a Rosary at 7pm, all in the chapel of Trevino-Smith Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass is set for 10 AM, Tuesday, May 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Born February 6, 1936 in Taylor, Texas, he was the son of August and Clara (Wuthrich) Decker of Hutto. Kermit’s love for college basketball started early and never left him. He played 4 years at the University of Texas at Austin (1954-1958) on full scholarship. He began on the freshman “Shorthorns” team, where he earned a letter. He advanced to varsity his sophomore year where he was a reliable guard and consistent double-figure scorer. By his senior year, he served as co-captain and led the team as its top scorer. He was also active in campus life as a member of the Texas Cowboys. Upon graduation he pursued a career with the USDA and retired with 34 years of dedicated service.
Kermit loved spending time outdoors clearing brush, playing basketball at the Y, and playing cards and dominoes with family and friends. His faith was just as steady and important in his life. In both good and hard times, Kermit’s faith gave him peace and a sense of direction. It was something he could always lean on, and it shaped the way he treated others—with kindness, patience, fairness, and care. He had a special devotion to Our Lady of Medjugorje. Kermit will be remembered as a loving father, husband, and friend.
He is preceded in death by; his parents, August and Clara, his loving wife of twenty years, Carolyn Decker, and two siblings, Delbert Decker, and Dorothy Johnson.
Kermit leaves behind to cherish his memory, two sons; Daren Decker (wife Gaye), and John Decker (wife Jeanne), and four daughters; Kelli (husband Mike Blankenburg), Laurie (husband Dave Cusano), Kerri (husband Danny Veitch), and Amy (husband Dusty Schoeling), fifteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
