(Evelyn) Wardene Smith passed from life through death into eternal life on January 8, 2026 in College Station, Texas. She was born on November 1, 1927 in Hobart, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Dumas, TX where she grew up and graduated from Dumas High School. She attended Texas Woman’s University in Denton and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. Wardene worked in the Oil and Gas Industry for many years, retiring in 1987.
Wardene was a woman of quiet sophistication. She enjoyed attending the symphony, opera, Neiman Marcus and Ferragamo shoes! Her hobbies included bridge, needlework and she was an accomplished seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her parents James Warden and Nelle Gunnels of Dumas, Texas and her sister Betty Jo Gunnels Ward of Arlington, TX.
She is survived by three sons, Sherman and wife, Sue of Fort Myers, Florida, David and wife, Teresa of College Station, Texas, J. Byron Smith and wife, Victoria of Ottawa, Canada, sister Jo Evelyn Moorman and husband, Garry of Springtown, Texas, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild born shortly before her death.
Special thanks to the incredibly loving staff of Accel Nursing home of College Station who treated her with the utmost care, love and kindness during her final years. Also, Traditions Hospice Care, especially Brad who regularly visited her and Ro her amazing nurse who was her advocate and loving friend.
