Mrs. Shenkir was born June 24, 1928, in the farming community of Meeks, near Temple, Texas, to Ed Schiller and Tillie Lesikar Schiller.
The family were members of Ocker Czech Moravian Brethren Church. Bernice graduated from Rosebud High School.
Bernice married William “Bill” Shenkir on April 19, 1947, in Temple. The wedding reception was held at Sefcik Hall. The band had played two songs when the power went out due to a sudden thunderstorm.
After living in Blevins, Temple, and Houston, the family moved to Bryan in 1955. The homeplace in Steep Hollow was purchased in 1957.
Bernice enjoyed sewing, cooking, and flower and vegetable gardening. She had a beautiful yard and flower gardens. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bryan.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years and her brothers, Nelson and LeRoy.
Survivors include her three sons and daughter-in-laws: Bill Shenkir Jr and Susan, Bryce Shenkir, and Byron Shenkir and Annette, five grandchildren, Paige Kocher and Fritz, Claire Shenkir, Jackson, AliAnn and Austin Attilio and one great grandson, Wyatt Attilio.
We are extremely grateful for the care Bernice received during her final years. John Lampo and Deb Hill at Luminos Hospice, Maggie Alexander and the team at Broadmore Court and Alicia Tucker. Alicia was her caregiver and friend until the very end.
